Salento (once called Gioi di Sala) rises in the Alento valley south of the river Cerreto and north of the river Fiumara of the Forest of the Saints (Selva dei Santi). It is part of the Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano and Mountain Zone Gelbison and Cervati.

The term derives from Lombard word "sala", that seat of the feudal lord; the term "Alento" refers instead to the name of the river that flows in the area. According to a hypothesis more fanciful name may derive from "sale" for the numerous salt in the past in the area.

Fractions of Salento are Omignano Scalo and Vallo Scalo.
